The Original Toyota Celica GT in Show roomThe Toyota Celica was first introduced to the world market in 1971. The very first Celica was made in Japan in December 1970. The GT model featured a 1588cc 4-cylinder DOHC power plant fitted with Solex carburetors that developed 115 horsepower and a 5-speed floor shift transmission. The suspension combined Macpherson struts in the front and 4-link lateral rods in the rear for extremely stable handling. Celica models offered a choice of four engines and three transmissions, a total of seven different configurations.
The Liftback was introduced in 1976.The Australian market received only the LT model Celica with the standard 2T engine. The ST and GT models were never imported into Australia by Toyota.
Most of the early Celica's in Australia were TA22 and then the newer RA23. The first letter of the model number relates to the engine type. For example the in "TA22" means that it had a T series engine, either the 2T, 2TB or 2TG.
The second letter relates to the body style and all 71-77 Celica's have the "A" type body style.
